 About Us

Youth Builders Inc. is a 501 c3 nonprofit organization that has structure programs assisting inner city youths. We believe in developing young individuals into young adults as we equip them with the tools they need to succeed in life.  We strive to give them hope by capturing their attention and breaking the pattern of unproductiveness and hopelessness to which they often are subjected to. Currently, we are serving more than 70 youths ranging from ages 6 to 21, and the numbers keep growing.

We have basketball teams and educational programs, and we desire to add more programs to help the enhancement of our youth. Because the youth participation is rapidly growing, your contributions can help Youth Builders Inc. complete our mission and our goals. Donations  of all sizes are welcomed and appreciated. Giving these youths a positive outlet will help prevent them from becoming statistics and allow them to contribute to the well being of our society. With your help our programs can be a spring board in their growth and success.

About the Owner

Tonya Dorsett began her community service as a teenager on Macombs Road, Bronx, New York. At the age of sixteen she began coaching the neighborhood boy’s basketball team. Tonya always knew she had a love for basketball, however while coaching she also discovered she had a love for young people. The young people would give her nicknames like: coach, preacher, teacher and counselor. Little did Tonya know that these names would shape her destiny.

In March of 1994 Tonya totally gave her life to Jesus Christ as her Lord and personal Savior. At this time she joined True Gospel Tabernacle Church where her love for the young people began to take shape. Shortly after joining the Church she became the leader of the Juvenile Prison Ministry visiting Spofford and Horizon facility on a monthly bases. Her work in the community did not stop there, in 1998 Tonya and some members of her church host a free 3 on 3 basketball tournament for the community kids, where  she got the late NBA player Malik Sealy to donate the trophies. In the summer of 1999, in conjunction with other organizations, a successful basketball tournament consisting of three divisions and eighteen teams was hosted at Roberto Clemente State Park and in June of 2000 she helped to coordinate the Malik Sealy “Memorial” Tournament held at Echo Park.

March of 2002 Tonya started working part-time at SCAN NY where she used her paychecks to give birth to Youth Builders Inc. a non profit 501 c3 organization  by August of the same year. On March 12, 2005 Tonya received The Community Service and Professional Excellence Award from the NAACP- Friends of Gloria Benfield Scholarship Foundation.
